In 1942, the remains of fortifications and a medieval manor were found nearby. The church dedicated to Saint Martin was first mentioned in records in 1157 and was destroyed during the Basel earthquake of 18 October 1356. It was replaced in the late Gothic period by a building with a relatively narrow church nave. The new church tower was constructed in 1395 and extended in 1544 and 1612 to its current height of 41 metres. It continues to be the tallest building in Riehen. The gable roof of the tower features a pointed, hexagonal ridge turret, dating from a later period, which contains a small belfry and is topped by a weather vane. The late-Gothic church with the extended nave emerged from a reconstruction in 1693\/94. The structure has largely retained this form to the present day.<\/p>","is_hightlight":true,"highlight_text":""}]}
